The search for Lúðvík Pétursson, who disappeared in a sinkhole near Grindavík in January 2024, has been officially concluded. Authorities confirmed that no further efforts will be made to locate the missing man. The Suðurnes Police stated their decision was based on a risk assessment.
The incident occurred on January 15, 2024, when Pétursson fell into a sinkhole while walking near the village. Emergency services were called immediately. Initial searches in the area were conducted, but no signs of the man were found. The sinkhole was located in a remote part of Grindavík, near the coast.
This is the second such incident in the region this year. In June 2023, a similar event led to the disappearance of another individual. That search was also called off after several weeks. Both cases have raised concerns about the safety of the area. Local officials have since urged caution for residents and visitors.
The decision to stop the search was made after evaluating the risks involved. The terrain remains unstable, and ongoing weather conditions have made further exploration dangerous. The police have not ruled out the possibility of the man being found in the future.
